A house fire in Richmond Hill on Labour Day has left five people, including a child, critically injured and is now being looked into as a potential arson case, according to a police source who spoke with City News.

The blaze was reported around 3:15 a. m. near Skywood Drive and Rolling Hill Road on Monday.

Jim Kettles from the Office of the Fire Marshall told reporters that several individuals were trapped inside the home during the fire, and at least one person had to be rescued from a second-floor bedroom.

Paramedics evaluated four adults and one youth at the scene, transporting them to various local hospitals for treatment. As of Monday afternoon, all five individuals are reported to be in critical condition.

Police later confirmed that one of those hospitalized is a child under 12 years old. The other four victims range in age from 20 to 70 years.

York Regional Police (YRP) have stated that officers found a jerry can at a nearby school.

“At this time it is being seized as a precaution. While it’s too early to confirm that it is related, its proximity to the fire is suspicious, and it will be investigated in full,” said a YRP spokesperson to City News.

Roads in the vicinity are closed as crews conduct their investigation.
