The Ontario Liberal caucus has selected John Fraser as their interim leader, a position he is set to assume for the third time.
According to the party’s constitution, the riding association presidents and executive council still need to vote on this nomination. However, the president of the Ontario Liberal Party informed members in a note today that Fraser has been nominated by the caucus.
President Kathryn Mc Garry mentioned in her email that more details about a leadership race will be revealed by February 9.

Bonnie Crombie stepped down last week as Liberal leader after receiving only lukewarm support during a leadership review in the fall.
In last year’s snap election, Crombie led her party to regain official status and increase its seat count but they still finished third and she did not secure her own seat.
Fraser has represented Ottawa South since 2013 and previously served as interim leader after former premier Kathleen Wynne left in 2018 and again when Steven Del Duca stepped down following their loss in 2022.
This report by The Canadian Press was first Jan. 19, 2026.
