Local leaders in Waterloo Region are sharing their thoughts after the Doug Ford government unveiled its 2026 budget on Thursday.
This 231-page financial plan outlines a record $226 billion in total program spending and anticipates a deficit that could reach $13.8 billion this year, an increase from the previously expected $7.8 billion deficit outlined in the 2025 budget.
Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic is pleased with the document titled “A Plan to Protect Ontario.”
He expressed happiness about the emphasis on strengthening the economy and investing in transportation infrastructure.
“These investments demonstrate continued recognition of the critical role Kitchener plays in the Province,” added Mayor Vrbanovic.
“Collaboration between all orders of government is essential, and we look forward to continuing that partnership in the months ahead. Kitchener is ready to work with the Province to turn these priorities into real outcomes.”
The key priorities include expanding Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph, improvements to the Kitchener GO Line, and support for affordable housing.
Vrbanovic also pointed out the province’s commitment to sports and recreation infrastructure, new schools, and support for small businesses – particularly a recent investment aimed at enhancing the local health technology sector in Kitchener.
At a regional level, Regional Chair Karen Redman is also backing the new budget figures.
“I am pleased to see investments to support small businesses, critical housing-enabling infrastructure, hospitals, and long-term care in Budget 2026,” said Redman.
“As we continue to grow as a community, our needs deepen. It’s important that housing-enabling infrastructure, well-paying jobs, and healthcare support remain at the forefront as we remain committed to ensuring well-being, affordability, and prosperity for all in Waterloo Region.”
