Environment Canada has put out snow squall warnings for the Niagara Region, as heavy and blowing snow is anticipated in certain areas on Monday.

Just after 5 a. m., the weather agency issued orange warnings for snow squalls in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, but these have been downgraded to yellow. A yellow warning for a snow squall was issued for St. Catharines at 10:15 a. m. but it has since ended.

For Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, the weather agency mentioned that the snow squall will last into this evening.

“Local snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm” are possible, Environment Canada stated, adding that there will be westerly winds gusting 70 to 90 km/h.

The strong westerly winds will start late this morning, creating areas of near zero visibility due to heavy snow and blowing snow, according to Environment Canada.

The agency advised people to prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions, and it’s best to avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities.

Orange is the second most serious of Environment Canada’s three color-coded warnings after red, and before yellow – the least serious warning.
