September 29, 1969 – January 27, 2025
With heavy hearts, we share the news of Norma Katharine Vaillancourt (nee Mendowegan), age 57 years, a member of Ginoogaming First Nation. She passed away unexpectedly at her home in Vancouver, British Columbia on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
Norma was born on September 29, 1969 in Aroland to Margaret (née Wadow) and Joseph Mendowegan. She survived Residential School and lived with her adoptive family. After spending several years working in Winnipeg, she eventually made her home in British Columbia. Norma loved her job and the people around her; when asked about what she did for work, she’d say she was “saving lives.” An animal lover at heart, she particularly enjoyed spoiling her cat. Her absence will be felt deeply by family, friends, and community members who hold her memory close.
Norma is survived by her daughter and son; sisters Roseline (Dennis) Mugaby and Merna Mendowegan; brother Basil Mendowegan (Rena); along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Margaret Mendowegan; sisters Joann Mendowegan, Beverly Mc Kay and Nelda Legarde as well as other extended family.
The Funeral Services are scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Friends and family are invited to come together at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Longlac for a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a. m., led by Deacon Michael Robinson. Cremation has already taken place and interment will occur later at Longlac Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST – WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay.
