Snow removal efforts are now in progress across Hamilton and the Niagara Region following a heavy snowfall on Thursday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Eric Tomlison mentioned that the Hamilton area, which includes Burlington and Brantford, received about 18 centimeters of snow by 5 p. m. on Thursday.

The Niagara Region experienced even more, with St. Catharines reporting as much as 27 cm.

Different cities have various strategies for snow clearing.

The City of Hamilton is requesting that residents move any cars parked on streets when snowplows are nearby. You can track snowplows here.

Crews are concentrating on clearing escarpment accesses, residential roads, sidewalks, and transit stops, according to a city social media update.

They are using an environmentally friendly magnesium-treated salt on sidewalks that works better in cold weather and leaves less residue behind, minimizing environmental impact, the city stated.

Burlington reported that it cleared all residential streets overnight Thursday and is applying sand to roads on Friday. While there was a ban on street parking in residential areas, it was lifted at 11 a. m. Friday.

In Brantford, the city announced that individual requests or complaints regarding snow removal won’t be addressed until 6 p. m. Friday. Instead, they will prioritize clearing roads, sidewalks, and multi-use paths.

“Residents are reminded to keep vehicles off the road where possible to allow crews to operate safely and efficiently,” the city said on Facebook. “Please use caution around plows, keep your distance, and avoid passing.”

St. Catharines has prohibited street parking for the next couple of days to give snowplows enough space to clear roads effectively. Vehicles left parked may be towed.

Those affected by this ban can park in city garages free of charge. More information can be found here.
