The cold weather alert has wrapped up, but more snow is on the horizon for Waterloo Region.

A yellow cold weather warning was active Saturday morning and ended just before 11 a. m., but there’s still a special weather statement regarding snow for Sunday.

Environment Canada indicates that temperatures in the region remain quite low, with wind chills around minus 20 degrees as of late Saturday morning. Meteorologist Allister Aalders from 570 says Southern Ontario is facing some of the chilliest air this season.

“Here in Waterloo Region, -13 C is the daytime high with a wind chill of -19 this afternoon; we dip down to -19 C tonight with the wind chill of -25,” he said. “Then temperatures are going to hold near -10 C for highs on Sunday and Monday. Overall, a colder pattern has we head towards the end of the month.”

Regarding the upcoming snow, Aalders points out that areas closer to the GTA will receive the most snowfall, but our region can expect a fair amount as well, particularly during Monday morning’s commute.

“It will begin as scattered flurries on Sunday morning and then into and through the afternoon, evolving into steady snow which will continue Sunday night and eases into flurries on Sunday night into Monday,” he said.

With these freezing conditions, it’s important to take precautions since frostbite can occur quickly with exposed skin. If you’re working outdoors, be sure to take regular breaks to warm up.

This also means keeping an eye on family members who might be vulnerable as well as pets.

Some symptoms to watch out for during extreme cold include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle weakness and changes in color in your fingers or toes.
