This Saturday, January 17, over 100 residents from Chatham-Kent will take the plunge into a pool of icy water for a great cause.

The ninth annual Polar Plunge is set to happen at Sons of Kent Brewing in Chatham at 1 p. m.

Last year in 2025, the event raised more than $63,000, but this time organizers are aiming even higher.

“We set a pretty high expectation, hoping to hit the $75,000 mark,” Sergeant Jason Herder. “At the end of the day, whether it was $500 or $40,000, whatever we raise, it goes to such a great organization, and it’s a great community event.”

All proceeds from this event benefit Special Olympics Ontario. This support helps athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the province train, compete, and shine.

“There’s 24,000 Special Olympic athletes across a province, and every dollar we raise goes right back to them. So it’s an amazing cause,” said Herder. “We’re impacting our local athletes; we’re impacting athletes across the province who are getting ready right now for the national games in Alberta this August. If they’re successful there, they’re going to be heading to International games.”

Registration starts at 11 a. m., and participants are encouraged to wear costumes. The registration fee is $40; however, if you raise at least that amount in donations, the fee is waived.

You can sign up ahead of time or make a donation online at https://soopolarplunge. crowdchange. ca/127781.
