Ontario Premier Doug Ford is speaking out against the federal government’s recent agreement with China, which Prime Minister Mark Carney announced during his trip to China.
The new deal states that China will cut tariffs on Canadian agricultural goods by March 1. In exchange, Canada will decrease its tariffs on electric vehicles from China, which are currently set at 100%. This means around 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles will be allowed into Canada each year at a reduced tariff rate of 6.1 percent. By 2030, the cost of about half of those vehicles could fall below $35,000. The federal government believes this will help make electric vehicles more affordable for Canadians.
In a post on X, Premier Ford expressed his concerns about the agreement, stating it could negatively impact Canadian auto workers and hurt the country’s auto industry. He argued that letting in inexpensive Chinese-made electric cars without ensuring equal investment could jeopardize Canadian automakers’ access to the U. S. market, which is Canada’s biggest export market. Ford also mentioned that this deal might threaten jobs in the Canadian auto sector.
Ford emphasized that to tackle these issues, the federal government and the prime minister should focus on supporting Ontario’s automotive industry to make it more competitive. He suggested that this should involve ending the federal EV mandate, removing federal fees, and enhancing trade regulations to better assist domestic manufacturing.
“Instead of importing made-in-China vehicles, the federal government needs to be focused on working with Ontario to bring investment and jobs to factory floors in Brampton, Oshawa, Ingersoll and across the province, where assembly lines are at risk or have already left the country.” he further said.
He added that instead of bringing in vehicles produced in China, Ottawa should partner with Ontario to draw investment and create jobs at auto plants in Brampton, Oshawa, Ingersoll and throughout Ontario where assembly lines face threats or have already been closed down. Ford stated that Canadians-whether farmers or auto workers-deserve a federal government that provides them every chance for success. He urged Prime Minister Carney to work together with Ontario to strengthen rather than weaken Canada’s auto sector while aiming to protect both Ontario and the nation overall.
Make no mistake: China now has a foothold in the Canadian market and will use it to their full advantage at the expense of Canadian workers.
