Propair runs direct flights from North Bay Jack Garland Airport to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This service is available five days a week, mainly catering to business travelers with morning departures to Toronto and evening returns.

Premier Doug Ford’s administration aims to “unlock” more capacity at Billy Bishop by taking over municipal land interests and revising the regulations that currently restrict how the waterfront airport operates. This initiative is presented as a way to boost competition in air travel, introduce new routes, and support job growth in aviation, tourism, and construction.

The government plans to take over the City of Toronto’s role in the tripartite agreement that oversees the airport and acquire ownership of city-owned lands at the facility.

“By expanding capacity at Billy Bishop Airport, the province will help meet future demand in southern Ontario, reduce pressure at Toronto Pearson International Airport, increase competition in the air travel sector to support more routes and cheaper flights, and support the creation of good-paying jobs in Ontario’s aviation, tourism and construction sectors,” says a release.

Recently, passengers from North Bay have gained a new option for reaching downtown Toronto. Quebec-based regional airline Propair has launched a Rouyn-Noranda-North Bay-Toronto route with flights operating five days a week.

“We’re unlocking Billy Bishop Airport’s full potential by expanding the airport so we can bring cheaper flight options, more routes, and more convenience to the millions of people from across Ontario who use this airport every year,” said Premier Doug Ford. “With an upgraded airport on the waterfront, Toronto and Ontario will be able to compete with world-class cities across the globe, supporting tourism and business travel across Ontario and creating thousands of new jobs for Ontario workers.”

Ahead of beginning construction on the airport’s expansion plan-and after discussions with affected First Nations-the province also plans to designate Billy Bishop Airport as a Special Economic Zone. This designation would expedite the expansion process by simplifying approvals.

<p“With Ontario’s population expected to grow to more than 20.5 million by 2051-including significant growth across the Greater Toronto Area-it’s critical that we build infrastructure needed for that growth while keeping people and goods moving,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Billy Bishop Airport is an important yet underutilized part of Ontario’s transportation network; increasing capacity will help meet future demand while strengthening connectivity and supporting jobs throughout Ontario.”

Billy Bishop Airport serves around two million passengers annually and connects Toronto with over 20 cities throughout Canada and the United States.

The Toronto Port Authority has proposed a modernization initiative for Billy Bishop Airport which includes updates to their tripartite agreement allowing modern jet aircraft operations along with changes made to accommodate these aircraft on runways-improvements aimed at enhancing terminal facilities while providing better access between them and Toronto’s waterfront area. Once fully expanded-the activities generated could contribute approximately $8.5 billion annually towards Canada’s economy by 2050 while supporting up-to-23 thousand positions solely within Ontario’s construction industry alone!

Billy Bishop Airport ranks as one of three busiest airports within this province acting also as vital hub facilitating regional travels alongside essential services like Ornge providing upwards of 4 thousand seven hundred air ambulance transports yearly covering entire provincial territory!
