January is wrapping up with some frigid temperatures, and there are warnings about extreme cold, but we can expect a slight warm-up this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a yellow cold warning for the Waterloo Region on Friday morning, with wind chills making it feel like -30 to -35.

“It is dangerously cold out there this morning, so make sure you layer up before you head outside because frostbite can develop in just a matter of minutes on exposed skin,” said 570’s Meteorologist Carl Lam.

A reminder from the weather service to keep pets indoors during these extremely cold times and to watch for color changes and swelling in fingers and toes.

The good news is that there’s no new snow expected in the coming days, and the weekend looks promising with some sunshine peeking through.

“I’m looking at the weekend with a glass-half-full type of view because temperatures will be increasing, but I don’t really want to call it a warm-up,” added Lam.

Temperatures are forecasted to reach a high of -13 C on Saturday, followed by -8 C on Sunday.
