London firefighters had to break through concrete and wood flooring Monday morning to put out flames that were hidden between floors at the city’s priciest condo ever sold.
Crews got the call around 7:30 a. m. to 122 Wortley Rd. after a resident noticed visible smoke. They arrived in just four minutes, according to London Fire platoon chief Gary Mosburger, and quickly found the fire situated between the first and second floors. Fire officials believe a wiring problem within the concealed floor space sparked the blaze, he said.
“It adds another layer of complexity to an already very stressful situation,” Mosburger said about cutting through concrete and wood flooring. “In this case, we had all the right tools in the right places.”
The damage is estimated at around $200,000 when considering smoke migration and water damage; however, the fire itself caused direct damages between $20,000 and $30,000.
Residents were evacuated while firefighters worked, but the building has since been returned to its owner. Thankfully, no injuries were reported although at least one unit sustained damage.
Mosburger praised early detection for preventing more severe losses.
“Obviously time of day makes a big difference in this case,” he said. “Early notification to the fire department to get our services and units on scene to quickly get control of this fire was the critical part.”
He urged residents not to disregard activated smoke alarms.
“There’s usually some type of an issue that it’s activated for,” he said. “Everybody on scene did exactly what they should have done and notified the fire department as quickly as possible.”
The three-storey, seven-unit condominium building includes a penthouse that sold last October for a record-breaking $2.25 million – making it London’s highest condo sale price ever.
