What to know about Hamber’s testimony today
Today, Becky Hamber spent at least five hours answering questions from three different lawyers regarding her and her wife’s care of the two boys.
Hamber faced inquiries from her own lawyer, her wife’s lawyer, and a Crown prosecutor about various allegations that have come up during the lengthy trial – including what she knew about the boys’ past behaviors and how she and Brandy Cooney treated and spoke of the children in their home.
At one point, Hamber became emotional as she recounted discovering the older boy, L. L., unresponsive on the floor after her wife called for her to come to their basement in 2022.
“Never in the many emergencies over the time in our relationship,” she said, “I had never heard that tone from Brandy before.”
She stated that neither she nor Cooney wanted the boy to die, did nothing to bring about his death, and wished for his surviving brother to remain with them.
Hamber was also asked about attempts made to get L. L. help for an eating disorder during his last months. The court has heard that at 12 years old, he weighed less than he did when he was six.
The court reviewed several text messages exchanged between Hamber and Cooney where they used what one lawyer described as vulgar and dehumanizing language when discussing the brothers.
Hamber expressed being “deeply, deeply” ashamed of those messages which were sent out of frustration, including one text suggesting they should “drown” the boys in their own feces.
“I can’t believe I let myself do that. I’m disgusted with myself,” Hamber said, noting that she’s lost a lot of sleep since those messages were brought up during the trial.
Both Hamber and her wife have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in L. L.’s death along with several other charges related to alleged abuse against J. L., who is now 13.
The trial will continue on Monday. This page is no longer live, but you can find more coverage at cbc. ca/hamilton.
