He passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband to Margaret (née Naimool). A proud father of Adele (Carl) and Chantele (Olivier), he was predeceased by his beloved son Nigel (2024). He was a cherished grandfather to Cassia, Keir, Noah, Cedric, and Solange.
Born in Claxton Bay, Trinidad to Mynee and Harry-who were descendants of indentured laborers from India-Suby was the second of three siblings: Ewart, Ingrid, and Rudy. He attended Presentation College in San Fernando and went on to earn his B. A. (Hons) in Sociology and History from the University of the West Indies. It was here that he met his future wife Margaret while biking around campus. After their wedding in 1967, they relocated to Jamaica where Suby pursued his Master’s in Sociology and became involved in an active intellectual movement. He stood up for academic freedom and social justice during the 1968 UWI student protests where he faced tear gas. The couple immigrated to Canada in 1969 where he completed his Ph D in Sociology at York University.
In 1973, drawn by the promise of milder Canadian winters, he joined the University of Windsor as a professor. Over his impressive 40-year career, Dr. Ramcharan took on various leadership positions including Head of the Sociology and Anthropology Department as well as Ombudsperson and Race Relations Officer. Known for being opinionated and outspoken, he frequently challenged conventional views on race and power. His work earned him several accolades such as the Right Hon. Herb Gray Award for Racial Harmony and the Award for Teaching Excellence. He wrote numerous publications including the groundbreaking book Racism: Non-Whites in Canada released in 1982.
Dr. Ramcharan was committed to improving Canadian society through community service with organizations like the Multicultural Council of Windsor, United Way, Windsor Police Services Board, Ontario Human Rights Commission, Ontario Heritage Foundation, Ontario Historical Society, Canadian Mental Health Association along with serving at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. As an avid traveler representing Canada worldwide; one notable role included being Head of Delegation for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation at the United Nations Conference on Racial Discrimination held in South Africa.
For an incredible 58 years together with Margaret-they shared a deep bond filled with love laughter along with playful teasing that kept their relationship lively. In Windsor they created a circle of friends who felt like family to them both. A lifelong learner known for his laid-back nature; Suby had a charming personality that made him well-liked by many people around him. As a dedicated father and loving grandfather he adored spending time with his grandchildren sharing “jumbie stories,” songs along with delightful tales from his own childhood experiences. Subhas Ramcharan leaves behind lasting impacts through his family contributions to society alongside influencing countless individuals through knowledge courage kindness along with wisdom.
At Dr. Ramcharan’s request cremation has taken place already. A Memorial Visitation is set at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home – Banwell Chapel located at 11677 Tecumseh Rd E.(519-253-7235) this will occur on Tuesday October 14th ,2025 starting from eleven o’clock until it leads into Funeral Service commencing one p. m. inside chapel. Interment will follow afterward at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.
