Authorities north of Toronto have opted not to file charges against a homeowner who shot and hurt someone they believe was trying to break in.

York regional police report that the homeowner used a gun that was legally owned and stored properly, and no charges will be brought based on the evidence gathered at the scene.

One of the suspected intruders ended up at a hospital in the Toronto area with a gunshot injury, and he may face charges soon.

Police responded just before 1 a. m. after receiving calls about a shooting at a residence in Vaughan.

They state that multiple suspects allegedly armed with at least one firearm forced their way inside.

The suspects were later spotted getting into a black pickup truck and leaving the area.

Last month, prosecutors dropped charges against a man from Lindsay, Ont., who had been accused of assaulting an alleged home intruder back in August 2025. His situation drew attention from Premier Doug Ford and others who criticized the initial accusations.

This report by The Canadian Press was first March 17, 2026.
