Kitchener’s Frederick Street bridge is set to be taken down next month.

The Ministry of Transportation informed in an email that the demolition will require a complete overnight closure of Hwy. 7/Hwy. 85, also known as the Conestoga Parkway, along with a full closure of Frederick Street.

Additionally, there will be long-term lane closures on the parkway.

Kitchener Coun. Scott Davey shared on X, formerly Twitter, that the work is slated to start on Dec. 6.

The ministry hasn’t confirmed that date but mentioned that preparations for the demolition are currently in progress.

This bridge needs to be demolished and rebuilt as part of plans for a new Highway 7 connecting Kitchener and Guelph.

The new highway is expected to feature four lanes, seven interchanges between Kitchener and Guelph, a multi-level link to Highway 85, and a new crossing over the Grand River once it’s finished.

This project has been promised for a while now; even though land has been bought and some initial work has started, there hasn’t been any clear timeline from the province regarding when it will be done.
