Update: At around 12:30 p. m., OPP reported that Highway 11 is closed in both directions from Longlac to Hearst due to extreme weather and limited visibility.

Original story follows.

On Wednesday, severe weather conditions have led to highway closures throughout Ontario.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a winter storm warning yesterday for parts of northwest Ontario.

The storm was expected to start Tuesday night and last until Thursday in Thunder Bay, Chapleau, Wawa, Timmins, and Moosonee.

On Wednesday, Environment Canada stated that heavy snow had moved into Northern Ontario, with some areas potentially receiving up to 60 cm by Thursday night.

The Ontario Provincial Police advised that highways were closed on Wednesday.

Highway 655 was shut down in both directions between Kidd Creek Mine Rd and Highway 11 in Timmins, the OPP announced on X on Wednesday morning.

Highway 11 has been completely closed between Western Avenue in Cochrane and Riverside Drive in Kapuskasing due to severe weather and poor visibility, according to the OPP.

The police urged drivers to avoid these areas unless it’s absolutely necessary.

More road closures may occur soon.

Huron County, Port Elgin, Mount Forest, Kitchener, and Guelph could see between 30 to 50 cm of snow starting Thursday morning and possibly continuing into Saturday.
