The child was found dead inside a Barrie home around 3 p. m. on New Year’s Eve while officers were responding to a wellness check, as stated in a news release from Barrie police.
The mother, aged 47, was also present at the Bayview Drive residence and was taken to the hospital, said Jason Fearon, staff sergeant with Barrie Police Service, in a video released on Thursday.
On Tuesday, after she was medically cleared, police charged her with first-degree murder, according to Fearon.
The major crime unit and forensic identification unit are still investigating the case, said Fearon.
“Due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits,” he mentioned in the video.
