As the new year begins, residents of Sarnia-Lambton are getting used to changes in provincial recycling rules.

On January 1, Circular Materials introduced a standard list of items that can be recycled throughout Ontario.

Among the newly accepted materials are deodorant containers, toothpaste tubes, ice cream tubs, black plastic containers, and frozen juice cartons.

Coffee cups along with other paper-based and plastic-lined drink cups can now go in the blue bin following a pilot program in some areas.

Circular Materials reported that early data from this pilot indicated an eight percent increase in collected polycoated paperboard.

This update comes as Ontario moves to a new extended producer responsibility (EPR) system for blue box recycling.

The system will be completely funded and managed by manufacturers of packaging and paper products and is seen as an effective way to boost recycling rates.

You can find more information on the Circular Materials website.
