Ontario’s police watchdog has reported that an officer who fatally shot a man while he was attacking a woman in a Markham, Ont., condo did not break any laws.

The Special Investigations Unit had been examining the shooting incident that occurred early on June 11 at a condominium complex on Buchanan Drive.

The SIU stated that York Regional Police officers were looking into reports of a disturbance at one of the units and knocked on the door several times while hearing “concerning sounds” from inside.

The agency indicated that a building security guard unlocked the door, revealing a woman lying face down on a massage table, unharmed.

According to the SIU, a man then exited from a bedroom and repeatedly stabbed the woman despite police commands to stop, prompting an officer to fire once and hit him in the head.

The 34-year-old man later died in hospital, and the SIU concluded that the officer acted reasonably given the situation.

The woman was also taken to hospital for her stab wounds, and authorities recovered a knife from the scene.

SIU director Joseph Martino has concluded “there is no basis” for pursuing criminal charges against the police officer involved in this case.
