Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking into a deadly car accident that occurred Wednesday night on Highway 406 in St. Catharines, Ont.
According to OPP, one person was thrown from the vehicle and was later hit by another car traveling in the southbound lanes near the third line.
The police report mentions that three people aged 18, 19, and 20 were inside the vehicle around 8:30 p. m., when the 19-year-old driver lost control while making a turn on Highway 406.
In a social media update, Const. Kerry Schmidt stated that the vehicle went off into a ditch and rolled over.
An 18-year-old passenger from Thorold, Ont., was thrown from the vehicle and subsequently hit by another passing car. She was declared dead at the scene.
The other two occupants were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The police noted that road conditions were wet and covered with snow, making them less than ideal at the time of the accident.
Schmidt mentioned that authorities will also look into whether seatbelts were being used properly.
All lanes have since been reopened for traffic.
