York Regional Police report that a 23-year-old man has been charged following a deadly, unprovoked attack in Richmond Hill on Wednesday evening.

Officers responded to reports of an assault close to Lorraine Street and Bernard Avenue just before 5 p. m.

Upon their arrival, police discovered the male victim with severe injuries. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead, according to YRP.

The Office of the Chief Coroner has identified the victim as Amir Shafei, 54, who lived in Richmond Hill. His death was caused by blunt force trauma.

Authorities informed 680 News Radio that Shafei was outside near his residence when he was attacked by an unknown man who does not reside in the area.

“The matter is currently being investigated. Our homicide unit has been engaged,” YRP Duty Inspector Ken Golding stated at the scene.

23-Year-Old Charged with Second-Degree Murder

Investigators have arrested Raymond Kim, 23, from Richmond Hill, charging him with second-degree murder related to Shafei’s death.

The police also mentioned that Kim faces two additional counts for violating his probation since he was under two separate probation orders at the time of Shafei’s attack.

No other suspects are currently being pursued. Investigators continue to work on identifying a motive and are urging any witnesses who haven’t yet come forward or anyone with security footage from the area to reach out to them.
