A strong winter storm moving through southern and eastern Ontario is making its way north, leading Environment Canada to issue multiple weather alerts for parts of northeastern Ontario.
Winter storm warnings, snowfall alerts, and freezing rain warnings have been issued from Parry Sound up to Timmins and from Sault Ste. Marie over to Mattawa.
This means many school buses will not run on Wednesday. This includes routes from Massey to Mattawa, covering Espanola, Manitoulin Island, Sudbury, and North Bay. Buses are also cancelled south of North Bay down to Parry Sound, as well as routes from Temagami northward to Cochrane including Timmins and Chapleau. Schools will remain open.
Ontario’s 511 isn’t reporting any highway closures but mentions that highway conditions vary from partly snow covered to fully snow covered with some areas having reduced visibility.
Environment Canada meteorologist Eric Tomlinson stated it will be a complicated weather scenario.
“As we head towards Sudbury, North Bay, that’s a really big mixed bag of precipitation for this event. It starts out as snow, but then it could switch over to a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain for some of this event,” Tomlinson said.
“As you head further north, we expect more snow.”
The region from Sault Ste. Marie northward to Cochrane and extending east past the Quebec border is under a snowfall warning as of 6:30 a. m. on Wednesday. According to Environment Canada, up to 20 centimetres of snow could accumulate in that area, which is also cautioned about local blowing snow.
“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” wrote Environment Canada in its warnings. “Allow extra time for travel. If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance.”
