Key Ottawa Court Cases to Follow in 2026

In the Ottawa area, several criminal trials scheduled for 2026 include the murder of a woman whose case remained unsolved for many years, as well as the alleged killings of two brothers in a strip mall parking lot.

As is often the case at courthouses, these scheduled trials aren’t guaranteed. Sometimes judges fall ill, plea deals may be reached, and occasionally defense lawyers get replaced, causing scheduling conflicts.

For now, here’s what we know.

Two men accused in what first reported as two suspected bounty killings and one attempted bounty killing are set to face trial before a judge and jury starting in early March.

Six weeks have been allocated for the case against Abdullahi “Avon” Osman and Ahmed “Baby Dice/Dice/Dicey” Siyad. In 2021, three brothers were shot, resulting in the deaths of Abdulaziz Abdullah, 34, and Mohamad Abdullah, 27.

Two Major Trials Anticipated in L’Orignal

At the courthouse located in Perth, Ont., Marcel Lapensee, 58, and Samantha Osborne, 25, are due to stand trial before a judge and jury for nearly two months beginning in late March. They are charged with the murder of Rose Kerwin, age 50, that took place in 2023.

The oldest courthouse in Ontario sits in L’Orignal east of Ottawa and will host two significant trials: one regarding the Nation River Lady case that went unsolved for decades and another involving a man charged with murdering his mother and brother from Chute-à-Blondeau neighborhood of East Hawkesbury.

Rodney Nichols is now 83 years old and has been given two months’ worth of trial dates before a judge and jury beginning late March. He faces charges related to the murder of Jewell Parchman Langford-48 years old at her disappearance from Montreal that same year-and whose case wasn’t resolved until 2023.

A trial for Gavin Chisholm will take place over six weeks starting August; he faces charges related to allegedly murdering his mother Sherri Buchanan (50) and his brother Darren Chisholm (24) back in 2023 along with attacking a truck driver on Highway 30 in Les Cèdres, Que.

Civil Case Ongoing

A significant civil case will also continue through court this March: Metro Taxi’s $215-million class-action lawsuit against Ottawa City Hall.

A judge ruled last year that the city acted negligently by not enforcing its taxi bylaws properly between 2014 until changes were implemented in 2016 due to ride-hailing services like Uber emerging more widely.

This March lawyers will argue about whether damages owed to victims should be assessed collectively or if each individual must prove their claims separately.
