Lorna June Brown passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, surrounded by family. The day was filled with visits, hugs, singing old hymns, laughter, tears, and shared memories – a lovely goodbye to a long and fulfilling life. She was 98.
Born Lorna June Cook on September 20, 1926, in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Clara M. and Fred Cook. After marrying her husband Stanley Charles “Stan” Brown in 1949, they moved from Canada to Houston where they built their careers and raised their three children.
June may have been small in stature but had a huge presence in her family. She was a spirited woman with strong opinions and a fun-loving nature who held deep Christian faith. She enjoyed volunteering, reading, gardening, and adored cats. During her early years in Houston, she worked at Fidelity Bank and joined St. Mark’s Methodist Church where she made lifelong friends in the Voyagers Sunday School class. Throughout her time in Texas, both she and Stan remained close to their Voyager friends from when they were young couples; only a few still survive today.
June had a rewarding career as Office Manager at Southwest Radiology Association. While living in Houston with Stan as charter members of Memorial Drive Methodist Church, they were also active participants at Westminster Methodist Church. Their time spent in Tomball included attending Tomball Methodist Church where she served as an MYF Counselor and participated in UMW activities. Her dedication to volunteering spanned elementary school libraries, the Meadowbriar Home for Girls, Tomball Hospital Auxiliary, and Tomball Emergency Assistance Ministries. Their second home on Bolivar Peninsula introduced them to another community of faith at Bay Vue Methodist Church in Crystal Beach where she volunteered at the Second Going Resale Shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Stan; her brother Cyril Cook; and her sister Audrey Emms.
She is survived by her sister Faye Gee from Toronto; along with her three children Chris (Kate) Brown from Greenwood IN; Jennifer (Mike) Solomon from Houston TX; and Lorel (Stephen) Hohl from Tomball TX. She was “Gran” to Hannah Hohl; Erin Solomon (Eric) Skaggs; Rebekah Hohl (Zach) Harrisberger; and Alexander (Mac Kenzie) Brown; as well as her three great-grandsons Everett Skaggs; Ethan Skaggs; and Dean Harrisberger. She is also survived by many extended family members including nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Heidy Cuellar along with the staff at The Heritage Tomball, Right at Home Care Cypress , and Devotion Hospice.
A memorial service will take place at 10 a. m. on Monday July 14 at Tomball Methodist Church located at 1603 Baker Drive Tomball TX 77375 with Rev Rebecca Jones officiating. Friends are welcome starting at 9:30 a. m. An additional service will be held later for Canadian friends and relatives back home in Ontario.
