Barrie police responded to a townhouse complex at 177 Bayview Drive near Little Avenue around 3 p.m. on Wednesday for a welfare check, where they found a deceased 10-year-old child in the unit. The child’s mother, aged 47, was also discovered inside and has since been taken to a local hospital, where she is currently receiving care.

The Barrie Police Major Crime Unit is now leading the investigation into this incident, as mentioned in a news release on Thursday. The statement clarified that there is no risk to public safety.

“Due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits,” police said.
