Environment Canada has put out a winter weather alert for Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, and the Niagara area.

In Hamilton and Burlington, the weather service is warning of significant snowfall with totals around 10 centimetres expected along with lower visibility, clearing up later today. In Brantford, snow accumulation could reach as much as 20 centimetres.

For Niagara Falls and St. Catharines, around five centimetres of snow is anticipated with reduced visibility due to heavy snowfall and winds gusting up to 70 km/h.

The agency indicates that the winter conditions are caused by an Alberta clipper that “will bring snow across the area which may be heavy at times beginning early this morning. The snow is expected to taper to scattered flurries or drizzle from southwest to northeast this afternoon. Lesser snowfall amounts are expected near the Lake Ontario shore where a transition to rain or rain snow mix is expected.”

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Ed Sanchuk advised drivers early this morning on social media app X, stating “if you are travelling, right now, on our highways, you need to slow down. We are responding to multiple crashes. 401, 402, 403 in various communities across southwestern Ontario.”

Sanchuk said if you “see snow. Go slow. It’s common sense.”
