The family of Nellie (Nastatia) Jakubowski shares the news of her passing on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at age 106. She was born on December 31, 1919, to John and Wasylena Zaychuk in the Pohortowetz district near Sheho, Saskatchewan. Nellie grew up there and later worked with local farming families. She eventually moved to Fort William, now Thunder Bay, where she met and married Vincent from Poland. They began their family together. Nellie loved her family above all else. Her children and grandchildren called her Baba and time spent with her. She enjoyed traveling to visit family out west and in Los Angeles. Nellie also made trips to Las Vegas and Argentina to connect with more relatives. Sharing her Ukrainian culture was important to her, especially during Christmas and Easter. She was known for cooking traditional dishes like paska and perohy. After working as a Domestic Worker, Nellie became a short order cook at Confederation College’s cafeteria until she retired. She liked gardening and helped out at Canadian Legion 149 events. Bingo nights at the Church Hall were also a favorite pastime. Her faith played a big role in her life. Nellie was known for being kind, caring, and generous. She was predeceased by her parents John and Bella Zaychuk; husband Vincent; brother George; sisters Pearl Bezborotko, Mary Skehar, Anne Skehar; and their spouses. Nellie’s surviving family includes sons Edward, Larry (Pat), Phil; daughter Holly Lynn; grandchildren Wayne, Heather, Aaron, Megan; great-grandchildren Taylor, Hailey, Kingston; Cashlynn; nieces; nephews; friends like Pauland Shelaugh. The family appreciates Dr. Mary Valente Dr. Gleason Dr. Heather McLean for their care over the years along with caregivers who supported Nellie at Hogarth Riverview Manor including Caitlin and Kylie who made her feel comfortable. Vichnaya Pamyat!
