An inquest will take place regarding the death of a woman at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre (HWDC) in 2019.
Krystle Catherwood, who was 35 years old, passed away on April 12, 2019, according to a news release from the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General.
The HWDC is also referred to as Barton Jail.
As stated in the Coroner’s Act, inquests are required in specific situations, including when someone dies in custody due to non-natural causes.
These inquiries aim to establish the cause and circumstances surrounding a death; however, juries cannot assign blame. Jurors may suggest recommendations to avoid future deaths, though these suggestions aren’t legally binding.
Inquests do not determine legal responsibility or criminal guilt.
The date and venue for Catherwood’s inquest have yet to be revealed.
