A lottery player from North York is now a millionaire after winning the lottery with just a $1 ticket.
Javier Morales took home the top prize of $2 million in the Ontario 49 draw on September 5.
The 44-year-old roofer has been playing the lottery every week for seven years, and this marks his first major win.
“I was picking up some snacks at a gas station during my work break and thought I’d check the tickets in my pocket. When I saw all those zeros, my head started spinning. I thought I was dreaming,” Morales said in an Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. news release. “I kept thinking, ‘There’s no way this is actually happening.’”
He mentioned that his first thought was to call his wife but then decided it would be better to tell her face-to-face, so he went back to work.
“I waited until I got home, and let me tell you, that felt like the longest shift ever,” he said.
“I had this huge secret and could hardly keep my excitement in. When I finally told my wife, her eyes widened; she was completely shocked. We were both thrilled and couldn’t believe it.”
He plans to use part of his winnings to pay off some bills.
“It’s an incredible feeling, but I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it. I always hoped my turn would come, and now that it has, I’m totally amazed,” he said.
“Nothing prepares you for when it actually happens.”
The Ontario 49 is a lottery game exclusive to Ontario, with tickets priced at $1 each.
The winning ticket was bought at Big Convenience on St. Clair Avenue West in Toronto.
