The upcoming Renfrew County council will see some fresh faces following Monday night’s municipal elections, as residents chose to make changes in seven municipalities.

Whitewater Region

In Whitewater Region, Councillor Christopher Olmstead narrowly won the deputy mayor position against Councillor Joseph Trimm by 214 votes. Incumbents Michael Moore and Connie White are returning to council, joined by newly elected Mel Langton and Amanda Mc Parland.

Laurentian Valley

Laurentian Valley voters brought in newcomers Jay Geddes and Jason Schulz while reelecting incumbents Allan Wren, Brian Hugli, and Wendy Hewitt. Steve Bennett was acclaimed as mayor with Keith Watt as reeve.

Pembroke

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Although the City of Pembroke is geographically located within Renfrew County, it is a separated single tier municipality and does not form part of the County government.)

Deep River

Voters in Deep River decided to re-elect all incumbents. Councillors Christina Giardini, Tom Vaughan, and William Fitton will be joined by newcomers Benjamin Myers and Jay Crawford. Mayor Suzanne D’Eon and Reeve Glenn Doncaster were acclaimed.

Petawawa

Laurentian Hills

In Laurentian Hills, Mayor Anne Giardini along with ward councillors Richard Rabishaw, Susan Elliot, Bruce Boucher, and Brenda Blimkie were all acclaimed.

Head, Clara and Maria

In the United Townships of Head, Clara and Maria, Karen Leclerc will return as mayor after defeating Rachel Richer. The council comprising Angela Kim, Katherine Burelle, Josee Lachance, and Chris Dowser was previously acclaimed.

Renfrew

Veteran Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon lost his bid for the town’s mayor position as Councillor Jason Legris emerged victorious from a crowded field of six candidates. Emon had served seven terms as county warden over his 36 years in office but could not overcome Legris’s significant 1,653 vote-margin. First-term incumbent mayor Tom Sidney finished fifth with just 156 votes.

Key concerns for town voters included fiscal responsibility along with the Ma-te-way expansion that exceeded its budget. Incumbents Kyle Cybulski, Andrew Dick, and John Mc Donald were re-elected alongside newcomers Bruce Rozycki, Scott Miller, and Sandi Heins. This marks a political comeback for Heins who previously served on council from 1985 to 2022 including twelve years as mayor.

Bonnechere Valley

A new council is set to take charge in Bonnechere Valley led by experienced Zig Mintha who was mayor from 2006 to 2010 and is also a former reeve of Eganville. Joining him are Kimberly Lehman , Kayla Desjardins , and Jack Roesner. Current county warden Jennifer Murphy was acclaimed as mayor. p >
