A child was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre on Wednesday morning after a woman and several children were hit by a vehicle in north Oshawa.

Air ORNGE was dispatched to Ryerson Crescent and Sheridan Street just before 9:30 a. m. Wednesday following the incident, which left a toddler with ‘life-threatening’ critical injuries sent to Sick Kids in Toronto. The woman was taken to Oshawa Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while three other children were transported to Lakeridge Health Oshawa with minor injuries, according to a spokesman for Durham Regional Police.

Authorities reported that the woman and the group of children crossing the street were struck by a turning vehicle. A toddler sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital, then flown via Air ORNGE to Sick Kids.

The intersection of Ryerson Crescent and Sheridan Street, situated just south of Durham College and Ontario Tech University, is closed as investigators look into the matter.

Police are advising drivers to steer clear of the area and find alternative routes.

In an update on Wednesday evening, police stated that the woman is a daycare worker who was supervising five children under three years old when they were hit by a turning vehicle while crossing the street.

The female driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with law enforcement officials, police say. She was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.

If anyone has information about this event, they’re asked to contact Det. Const. Hoevenaars of the Durham police Collision Investigation Unit at 905-579-1520 ext. 5255.
