With Ward 7 Councillor Juanita Nathan moving to Ottawa after securing a Parliament seat in the Pickering-Brooklin riding, Markham council is gearing up to find her replacement without going through a byelection.
Instead, following the city’s policy, councillors will appoint someone to take over for the rest of the current term, which ends on November 14, 2026.
Although the federal election was held on April 28, Nathan’s victory hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. The Chief Electoral Officer is expected to certify the results and finalize everything by May 19.
Once that confirmation comes in, Markham council will officially announce that the Ward 7 seat is vacant and decide how to fill it. A meeting date for this decision has not been set yet.
According to the Council Vacancy Policy, council has these options for appointing a new member:
– Appoint an unsuccessful candidate from the most recent regular election for Ward 7, which took place in 2022.
– Appoint any other eligible voter from Markham.
If council opts for the first choice, they can pick from candidates who ran in Ward 7 during the 2022 elections but didn’t get elected. This includes Nimisha Patel, who came in second with 2,648 votes; Shahzad Habib with 1,955 votes; and Neetu Gupta who received 1,292 votes according to Elections Markham.
To qualify for appointment, these candidates must still meet all requirements as voters in Markham and fulfill legal obligations for officeholders.
Alternatively, council could open up applications to any eligible voter in Markham. The city clerk would manage this application process and ensure it aligns with all necessary criteria.
<p While some residents might be disappointed by the lack of a byelection and public vote option, this appointment approach guarantees that Ward 7 won’t have long periods without representation.
The city plans to keep things transparent by posting public notices about this decision on its website and social media channels while also sharing them with ratepayer and community organizations.
Anyone interested in applying must meet the requirements established by the city clerk.
