The safest type of emergencies are the ones that are simulated.

It’s even better when these events are planned, allowing emergency response teams to turn what might seem like chaos into valuable practice for when a real situation – hopefully never – arises.

Residents of Oshawa and users of the Oshawa Executive Airport should be aware that a simulated emergency drill will take place on airport grounds, as per Canadian Aviation Regulations, on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

A notice from the City of Oshawa mentioned that there will be more fire and emergency response vehicles in the area around Keith Ross Drive to the west, Taunton Road to the north, and Airport Boulevard to the east during the drill.

Participants in this exercise include airport personnel, Oshawa Fire Services, Region of Durham Paramedic Services, and Durham Regional Police Services.

“Joint agency simulated emergency exercises help to reinforce emergency response procedures and allow emergency first responders to be ready to support the safety of the community and airport users,” said the city in its news release. “Your support for this and future events is appreciated and any questions can be directed to Oshawa 311.”

Airports across Ontario regularly conduct emergency training drills, typically once a year.

This past June, crews gathered at Pearson International Airport in Mississauga. Fire trucks rushed towards a staged ‘disaster scene,’ police secured the perimeter while paramedics acted out rescue operations for lives that weren’t actually at risk; all part of Canada’s largest airport holding its annual comprehensive emergency exercise.

This year’s event at Pearson saw about 300 participants including first responders, airline staff, government agency workers, and airport teams taking part.
