After four protesters were taken into custody last week during demonstrations against the removal of bike lanes in Etobicoke, Toronto Police released a statement on Wednesday afternoon cautioning that they will not hesitate to arrest anyone who breaks the law while protesting.

In their statement, police mentioned they are aware of ongoing plans for protests along Bloor Street West as crews continue to take down bike lane infrastructure in the area.

“While we recognize that people have differing views on this work, the right to protest does not extend to unlawfully obstructing work, damaging property or interfering with police officers in the execution of their duties,” read the statement on X.

“We want to be clear that anyone who engages in criminal activity can expect to be arrested.”

The protests started on Oct. 13 and have been happening for over a week now. Work trucks have had to turn around or leave twice during this time due to protesters trying to slow things down. The first incident occurred even before work began on the night of Oct. 13, and the second happened during a rally on Oct. 20 marking one week since the first time trucks were turned away.

Advocates admit they are trying to make it as inconvenient as possible for crews removing the bike lanes to highlight their opposition against what they see as life-saving safety measures for cyclists being taken away by the Ford government.

This issue has sparked division within the community, with some local residents and groups arguing that the bike lanes were poorly designed from day one and that there isn’t enough bicycle traffic in the area to justify taking road space needed by vehicles.

The four individuals arrested face charges of mischief and obstructing police primarily because they refused orders from police to move out of the way while crews attempted their tasks.

The advocacy group Cycle Toronto shared a post on Instagram Wednesday stating that protests against bike lane removal will keep going. They cautioned those planning future protests to “exercise extreme caution” as “police have escalated their numbers and tactics and the airborne dust from the milling is extremely toxic.”

“This is a marathon, not a sprint,” they remarked while suggesting they will keep “defending” the remaining 18 kilometers of bike lanes set for removal in upcoming months.

Meanwhile, police stated they will “continue to take necessary steps to ensure this work can proceed safely and without unlawful interference.”
