Restoration and cleanup efforts have begun at the Kitchener Market after a fire on July 12, with plans for the building to reopen by spring 2027.

Woodhouse Restoration Services, based in Kitchener, will handle the project. Their work includes taking out fire-damaged materials, cleaning affected areas, and getting the building ready for repairs.

This construction phase follows environmental, public health, technical, and insurance evaluations to assess the damage and outline what’s needed for a safe reopening. A competitive bidding process was also conducted to find a suitable contractor.

The first step involves removing damaged walls, flooring, and other impacted parts of the structure. Crews will also clear out furniture and equipment that can be cleaned up and put back into use. They’ll focus on cleaning surfaces as well, including sandblasting ceilings to eliminate soot and smoke stains.

While these efforts are underway inside the market building, it continues to operate every Saturday using temporary setups for vendors who were affected by the fire.

<p Around 46 vendors remain active in the Saturday market, which includes both lower-level vendors and outdoor produce sellers. To support these businesses during recovery, vendor fees have been cut by half starting September 5.

Kitchener anticipates spending over $240,000 on vendor assistance and temporary infrastructure improvements such as electrical and plumbing services so businesses can keep running while restoration takes place.

The city is also planning for winter operations to ensure market activities continue through colder months.

This recovery work coincides with the annual Fall Fair at the market on October 10, featuring seasonal fun and shopping opportunities with local farmers and food makers.

Having served more than 155 years, Kitchener Market is a vital space for local businesses and community events.

Updates about restoration progress will be available on the website with hopes of welcoming back vendors and customers in spring 2027.
