The Whitby Public Library will be featured prominently when the Kids Reads 2026 finale airs on Oct. 19.
Shot at the library’s central branch in September, the show showcases the competition’s five shortlisted books and wraps up with popular hosts Gary the Unicorn and Cottonball revealing this year’s winner.
This broadcast not only honors exceptional Canadian children’s literature but also highlights the community spirit that helped bring this production to life, according to Whitby Library CEO Rhonda Jessup.
“We’re thrilled to be a part of this exciting celebration of reading that will be shared with audiences across Canada,” Jessop said. “CBC Kids Reads has been a wonderful opportunity to inspire young readers and showcase the enthusiasm of the children and community members who helped make this experience so memorable.”
“The Whitby Public Library is incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed their time and support throughout the project. Their generosity helped create a special and lasting experience for local children and families.”
More than 2,000 community members participated in the event in September, with Whitby Library Communications Manager Karen Horsman describing it as “one of the largest and most ambitious events in the Whitby Library’s history.”
“Children and families loved the CBC Kids Reads event, which brought television magic to life through interactive activities, character meet-and-greets, and immersive experiences throughout the library,” she said. She also mentioned that feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, praising it as a “unique opportunity to experience the excitement and behind-the-scenes magic of a major television production.”
Whitby Library encourages everyone to tune in on October 19 at 9 a. m. to find out which title won CBC Kids Reads 2026 and celebrate all those who came together to make this national program a success.
