HAMILTON, ONT. – The provincial and federal governments are putting over $203,000 into the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response to support steel and manufacturing workers in the Hamilton region who have been affected by tariffs.
This funding will assist 75 workers and jobseekers in enhancing their skills, moving into jobs that are in demand, and ensuring that businesses have the workforce they need, according to a release.
The province will provide this funding through Skills Advance Ontario, which collaborates with employers and training organizations to help workers transition into sought-after careers. Learning Connections Hamilton will run this initiative through its Skill Pathways for Work project. Participants will receive skills assessments, personalized training plans, digital skills upgrades, training referrals, case management, and support for obtaining certifications and short-term training needed for employment, as stated in the release.
This investment builds on Ontario’s wider efforts to support workers in Hamilton’s steel and manufacturing industries.
The United Steelworkers Action Centre was established in August 2007 and transitioned into a POWER Centre on March 23, 2026. This change was made to offer better rapid-response employment services and transition assistance to workers impacted by layoffs or workplace closures.
Workers seeking assistance can visit 1031 Barton St. E. in Hamilton or call 905-548-9197 for more details.
Those affected by layoffs or economic challenges in Hamilton can also access free employment services aimed at helping with job searches, career planning, and skill development. Through Better Jobs Ontario, eligible individuals may receive up to $35,000 for skills training programs lasting up to two years, as noted in the release.
