The provincial government is set to upgrade another five kilometre segment of Highway 11/17 into a divided four lane road.
This new section will stretch from Coughlin Road to Mc Guire Road in Shuniah.
This project is part of a broader initiative to convert the entire corridor of Highway 11/17 from Thunder Bay to Nipigon into a separated, four lane highway.
“This important work will ensure drivers and business here in northern Ontario have a safe and reliable option to get where they’re going while supporting the movement of goods across the country and creating good paying jobs for Ontarians,” said Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria from a podium at Shuniah’s truck inspection station, where he announced the news.
For years, there have been calls to twin northern Ontario’s roads: two lane highways without a median separating oncoming traffic are much less safe than divided roads.
Last year saw an alarming rise in highway fatalities, leading to intensified demands for highway improvements, with leaders at all levels of government recognizing the need to improve unsafe roads in northern Ontario.
“We appreciate and understand the speed at which we need to go and we’re moving in that direction,” Sarkaria says. “And you’ll see more of that work that we’re going to do on this over the next couple of months as well, really speeding up the process on getting these [upgrades] under construction and built.”
