Oshawa Festival Breaks Attendance Records for Fourth Year

This year’s full two-day Convergence Festival in Oshawa was as special as the city itself, with each day offering a different atmosphere and likely setting new attendance records along the way.

There’s so much happening at the festival, a celebration of creativity and togetherness that turns downtown into a lively center of artistic expression. It features a varied lineup of artists and musicians from different genres, along with live wrestling at the Four Corners, a Punk Rock Flea Market, a Nerd Alley, unique art displays, and plenty more.

Each day also showcased a headliner that drew crowds of over 2,000 to the main stage. Saturday was especially packed with I Mother Earth performing, followed closely by the Sunday finale featuring Maestro Fresh Wes, known as the Godfather of Canadian hip-hop.

It’s truly impressive what organizers have accomplished as they continue to gather insights four years into this event.

The distinct “each day has its own vibe” theme is something Krista Licsi, executive director of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and someone who has passionately supported Convergence since its inception in 2023, noted was part of their vision from day one.

“What I loved this year was that each day had its own personality,” she shared. “Saturday brought incredible energy, particularly for I Mother Earth, while Sunday had a more relaxed feel with the Vintage Market featuring different music styles and audiences. Closing out with Maestro Fresh Wes felt like such an amazing finish.”

“Honestly, we’re just so grateful. That shift in energy between Saturday and Sunday wasn’t an accident; we planned it that way on purpose. We wanted each day to have its own personality and give people real reasons to come out both times,” she added. “Watching the crowd light up during I Mother Earth was one of those unforgettable moments filled with pure energy from start to finish. Then Sunday brought something calmer and more laid-back while closing things out with Maestro Fres Wes felt like just right. We’re already buzzing with ideas for 2027 and can’t wait to improve on this experience even further! Huge thanks to everyone who came out and made this festival what it is.”

The festival did face some challenges since it was their first time organizing such an extensive two-day event. Some areas – like Family Zone – had fewer vendors than expected while plans regarding side streets were adjusted.

The festive spirit stayed strong throughout both days; however, Saturday’s rock-and-roll atmosphere transitioned into a multicultural blend on Sunday with Licsi estimating that attendance numbers would be comparable to last year’s figure of about 34,000 when RISE Til’ INFINITY opened up Friday afternoon showcasing hip-hop talent.

“Every year teaches us something new about how folks experience Convergence; there’s always room for improvement on what we’ve built here. Expanding into two full days allowed us to experiment more creatively; we’ve got loads of ideas lined up for enhancing Family Zone along with overall experiences for 2027,” Licsi told INSAUGA Canada while admitting her feet were “feeling sore” after all activities wrapped up yesterday. “After all it will be our five-year anniversary!”

Catherine Mac Donald Haylock attended downtown festival last year for her first time too but noticed some changes this year though she remarked that energy remained unchanged staying true to its roots.

“The vibe was still there; people were simply enjoying themselves. It feels genuine.”

As always there were many things happening at the festival including Dimension X’s immersive storage container art installations returning again – “loved that mushroom container – really took you somewhere else,” Mc Donald Haylock exclaimed – alongside wrestling matches (with certain family members ensuring everything stays above board) attracting big crowds right in downtown.
A Durham Roller Derby Showcase joined this year’s lineup along with live DJ competitions hosted by Vibrant Sounds taking place on Sunday while New Orleans-style jazz bands wandered around entertaining attendees plus there were after-parties Saturday night keeping guests engaged well beyond headliners’ final notes.
