The Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital foundation has kicked off its 2020 Angels of Giving campaign.
This annual event aims to raise funds for capital equipment at the hospital that isn’t covered by the province’s Ministry of Health.
“We are so grateful to the community for their support,” said Gerry Dearing, executive director of the foundation. “One thing that we’re doing this year is that we’re asking people to donate as a thank you to health-care workers, the front-line team. This will help them with purchasing the equipment that they need to help the community.”
The foundation hopes to raise $450,000 for its 2020-21 campaign.
This year’s purchases will include diagnostic endoscopes, which are internal cameras used to diagnose various conditions; a diagnostic ultrasound probe, which is an external body scanner that examines internal organs from outside; and 10 wireless workstations on wheels equipped with vital signs monitors. These will allow nurses to track and monitor vital signs electronically and record information right at the bedside, making record keeping quicker and more accurate.
Also included in the capital equipment list is a specialized blood bank freezer designed for blood plasma used in trauma cases, surgeries, and treatment for other specialized diseases.
“The blood bank freezer is massive,” said Dearing. “It’s downstairs in our blood bank area, and emergency’s right above it. It was designed for emergencies and surgeries and things like that. It’s special plasma that they keep in there when they need to do transfusions. That’s where they store it – it has to be at a certain temperature.”
Despite having to cancel this year’s golf invitational due to COVID-19, those who donated raised $10,350 for the foundation this year, which will directly support the capital equipment campaign.
