The Michigan Department of Transportation is informing travelers that border crossings between Ontario and Michigan will be shut down on Friday morning to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
Traffic at the Gordie Howe International Bridge, Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, and Ambassador Bridge will stop before 8:46 a. m., which marks the moment when the first passenger jet crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
The border at Sault Ste Marie International Bridge and Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia will also close for a short time.
Drivers should anticipate about a half-hour delay from when border traffic halts until the crossings are reopened.
As flags are raised at border locations, Taps will be played.
M-DOT advises cross-border commuters to plan ahead for these closures.
Normal operations will resume following the observance.
