The province’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into a shooting involving police that occurred south of Port Elgin, resulting in the death of a man.
The SIU has started its investigation after the event took place in the Municipality of Kincardine late Saturday afternoon.
At around 5:40 p. m., officers from the South Bruce OPP tried to arrest a person who had been linked to several incidents earlier that day throughout South Bruce and Huron County, according to a news release from the SIU.
The individual was found at a home on the Bruce Saugeen Townline by members of the Emergency Response team and Canine Unit. During this encounter, police fired their weapon, leading to the death of the individual, a 48-year-old man, as stated in the release.
The SIU reports that initial details suggest that throughout Saturday, the man allegedly committed multiple motor vehicle thefts and residential break-ins across various areas, including stealing a firearm.
As events unfolded during the day, law enforcement made several efforts to locate him. He was spotted in the afternoon driving a stolen vehicle. A tire deflation device was used, causing him to lose control and leave the road; he then fled on foot, according to statements from the SIU.
He was eventually found near Side Road 13 and Bruce-Saugeen Townline. There was an interaction between him and officers outside a residence where one officer discharged his firearm and struck the man, as reported by the SIU.
Rescue efforts were initiated immediately and he was taken to a hospital where he later died. A post-mortem examination is set for Monday as mentioned by the SIU.
A total of four investigators and three forensic experts have been assigned to look into this case, according to information from SIU. Since SIU has taken over this case, OPP will not provide any further updates on it for now as per SIU guidelines.
The SIU operates as an independent civilian agency in Ontario responsible for investigating incidents involving police officers related to deaths or serious injuries caused by police actions like discharging firearms or sexual assaults.
On Saturday at 4:44 p. m., West Region OPP announced via social media that Bruce Saugeen Townline would be closed between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road near North Bruce community south of Port Elgin.
A significant police presence could be observed in this area while motorists were advised to find alternate routes. Authorities confirmed there was no threat posed to public safety during this time.
By 7:30 p. m., another West Region OPP post indicated that normal patrols had resumed while heavy police presence ended south of Port Elgin between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road along Bruce-Saugeen Townline. An update shortly after at 9:10 p. m. mentioned ongoing localized investigations but maintained road closures were still in effect around Bruce-Saugeen Townline area.
Around when West Region OPP first posted before 5 p. m., Saugeen Shores police requested people avoid Gustavus Street intersection with Goderich Street due to another multi-vehicle accident nearby.
No danger remained for public safety concerning these incidents; more information would follow from OPP when available according to Saugeen Shores police updates on social media. As of Sunday morning, it hadn’t been verified if incidents near North Bruce connected with those in Port Elgin.
Saugeen Shores police also noted at about 6:30 p. m. on Saturday regarding joint investigations being carried out by South Bruce OPP along with them into what was termed as serious motor vehicle collision occurring downtown Port Elgin area.
