The Bluewater District School Board is reaching out to the community for input on the design of a new school in Port Elgin.
The board received funding approval from the Ministry of Education to support a new-growth elementary school through the 2024-2025 Capital Priorities Grant program. The ministry has allocated over $17.8 million for this project in Port Elgin.
After discussions with local community and municipal partners, board staff recognized the increasing demand for student enrollment in Saugeen Shores and submitted a proposal for an additional school.
This new school will accommodate 409 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 and will work alongside Northport Elementary School and Port Elgin-Saugeen Central School.
The design of the Port Elgin elementary school will be based on a revised version of Beavercrest Community School in Markdale, including a second floor, according to the board.
“This approach will allow the project team to retain proven base design elements while making targeted adjustments to better meet the specific needs of students and staff,” the board said in an online notice.
In 2025, the board chose a three-hectare site located in the final phase of Summerside subdivision, west of Highway 21 on the south side of Concession 10 at a future extension of Waterloo St., as the future location for the school.

A dedicated email address, pesdesignreview@bwdsb. on. ca, has been set up to collect public feedback and questions about this new building until May 22. The board mentioned that responses to frequently asked questions will be posted on their web page as needed.
