A multi-vehicle accident on Highway 1 east of Portage la Prairie, close to Oakville, led to a Code Orange alert at Portage District General Hospital on Friday. Thankfully, officials report that all patients are now stable.

The crash involved numerous vehicles and took place earlier in the afternoon. Emergency Medical Services transported everyone injured from the scene to the hospital, where staff quickly triaged and evaluated them.

Southern Health‑Santé Sud activated the Code Orange briefly, a protocol designed for mass-casualty situations that brings in extra resources and personnel to handle a large number of patients. This alert prompted additional doctors, nurses, and support staff to come in and assist with the situation.

The Code Orange was canceled at 2:14 p. m., with hospital officials confirming that all individuals brought in from the accident were stable.

Earlier communications from hospital officials indicated that some roads nearby were either unsafe or closed. They advised staff to only report if it was safe for them to travel to work.

The Portage Fire Department mentioned that emergency crews have cleared the collision site. RCMP remained present throughout the afternoon while tow trucks worked on removing damaged vehicles.

No further information has been shared about what caused the crash or how serious any injuries might be.

Officials expressed their gratitude toward hospital staff and emergency responders for their swift and organized reaction.
