A recent operation by the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) in downtown Oshawa, called Project Atlantis, has led to more than 250 arrests over four months and the seizure of cocaine, fentanyl, and cash.

This initiative, described by DRPS officers as “a proactive enforcement and community engagement initiative,” started in April and will keep running until the end of 2026.

According to a release from the police, DRPS officers collaborated “alongside community partners to address public safety concerns through targeted enforcement, intelligence-led investigations, and ongoing engagement with residents, businesses, and community organizations.”

The main goal of this investigation was tackling the sale and distribution of illegal drugs in downtown Oshawa, as stated in the release.

From April to July, DRPS officers made a total of 267 arrests and reported seizing about 45 grams of fentanyl, 674 grams of cocaine, 12 grams of crack cocaine, along with over $10,000 in proceeds linked to crime.

Officers also completed over 1,300 hours on bicycle patrols, 160 hours on foot patrols, and 64 hours on UTV patrols while dedicating nearly 100 hours towards engaging with youth and schools.

“These highly visible patrols enhanced police presence in the downtown core, waterfronts, trails, and parks,” mentioned the release.

Project Atlantis has resulted in hundreds of arrests and significant drug seizures while increasing police visibility throughout Downtown Oshawa.
