Progressive Conservative candidate and former city councillor Jeff Beattie has claimed victory in the Hamilton East-Stoney Creek provincial byelection.

With all polls tallied before 10 p. m., Beattie won by a margin of 1,614 votes, earning 38.87 percent of the vote share, as reported by Elections Ontario. Voter turnout was at 29.25 percent.

NDP candidate Monique Taylor garnered 32.9 percent of the votes while Heino Doessing from the Ontario Liberal Party received 23.45 percent.

“Over the last four years, I’ve proven myself as somebody that listens to the community, works hard to get results, tangible results, and I’m looking forward to being able to do that as the MPP,” Beattie said when addressing media Thursday night at his campaign celebration at Clifford Brewing on Nash Road.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford joined Beattie for the campaign festivities.

“Jeff is an amazing candidate, a relentless worker. He worked around the clock, but he’s well known. I’m just blessed to have a great person part of our family, part of our team down at Queen’s Park,” he told reporters after the announcement of Beattie’s win.

This byelection was one of three happening on Thursday, with additional contests in Toronto’s Scarborough Southwest and York-Simcoe ridings.

PC Susan Lahey emerged victorious in York-Simcoe while NDP’s Fatima Shaban took home a win in Scarborough Southwest.

“Tonight, Ontario voters in York-Simcoe and Hamilton East-Stoney Creek elected two strong local representatives who will protect Ontario, stand up for workers and families and keep our province moving forward,” Ford stated in a news release.

Seat became available following Lumsden’s retirement

Six candidates were competing for the provincial Hamilton East-Stoney Creek seat that became open after Progressive Conservative MPP and former minister of sport Neil Lumsden retired on August 4.

Beattie is also a local business owner who was elected as city councillor for Ward 10 in 2022. Previously he served as a trustee on the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board for wards 9 and 10 from 2014 to 2018.

Throughout his byelection campaign, he informed CBC Hamilton that he aimed to continue “to build on the progress our PC government has achieved here in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek,” mentioning “making the gas tax cut permanent and scrapping HST on new homes” as key initiatives.

“We’ve been there to stand up for steel, manufacturing, and local workers affected by U. S. tariffs, introducing Buy Ontario policies, implementing tax cuts, and providing relief for industries impacted by tariffs helping businesses keep people working,” he added.

He also pointed out that constructing the new Confederation GO station was an important investment in the area.

NDP aimed to regain control of the seat

Taylor, a former Hamilton Mountain MPP, sought to return to Queen’s Park with hopes of reclaiming this seat for her party.

Lumsden first captured this riding for Progressive Conservatives back in 2022 and retained it again in 2025. However prior to his victories it had been held by NDP for fifteen years.

Taylor didn’t manage to take it back but she did make gains compared to previous election results from general provincial elections held earlier.

In those elections Lumsden received around forty-two percent while Doessing followed closely with about thirty-two percent. The NDP candidate then was Zaigham Butt who got approximately eighteen percent.

The voter turnout back then reached forty-three point ninety-two percent.

Taylor expressed pride over her campaign saying “I’m incredibly proud of the campaign we ran and the issues we fought for. This was a campaign that highlighted the issues that matter most to Hamiltonians whether it was cost-of-living or fighting against big tech AI data centres.”Taylor continued:“While we may not have seen results we wanted we know our message continues resonating with Ontarians.”Monique Taylor campaigningNDP CampaignPrior political analysts indicated how Ford’s interactions with U.
