There’s been considerable storm damage reported in southern Ontario after severe weather struck yesterday afternoon.
The Northern Tornadoes Project indicates that most of the damage is concentrated in an area from Bayfield to Cambridge, including reports of serious destruction, like a barn that was completely ruined.
Early evaluations suggest that straight-line winds were mainly responsible for the damage. However, the Northern Tornadoes Project notes that one or more tornadoes might also have played a role.
A team from Western University will head out this morning to examine the impacted areas and figure out what caused the destruction.
The organization is cautioning residents about several images circulating online that allegedly depict tornadoes in Guelph and Paris. They advise that these images may be AI-generated and shouldn’t be seen as trustworthy evidence.
The group mentions that AI-generated storm images are increasingly common during severe weather situations.
Further damage has also been reported in North York, Toronto, and near Orr Lake, which is close to Barrie.
Severe storms with heavy rain, strong winds, and large hail swept through the Greater Toronto Area, leading to widespread power outages, flooding, flight delays, and significant harm to a major concert venue.
Live Nation Canada states that Rogers Stadium, an outdoor music venue with a capacity of 50 thousand people in Toronto’s northern area, suffered “significant” damage.
The Northern Tornadoes Project says they will share the results of their damage assessments once they’re ready.
