The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding drivers to be careful as many students in Ontario head back to school next week.
Most school districts will welcome students back on September 8, and police indicate this will lead to more traffic near schools, bus stops, and pedestrian crossings.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down and stay vigilant as school zones get busier during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Drivers should also be ready to stop when they see a school bus with flashing amber lights.
According to the OPP, once a school bus has stopped and its red overhead lights are flashing, drivers must stop by law and remain stopped until the lights turn off and the stop arm is retracted. On roads without a physical median, all traffic must stop in both directions.
“Whether travelling by vehicle, bicycle, school bus, or on foot, everyone has a responsibility to help keep children safe,” read a release from the OPP Media Service.
