Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) has started construction at 200 Beausoleil, an affordable housing project located on an urban infill site in the Lowertown area.
Diamond Schmitt, working together with KWC Architects, is leading the community-oriented design for this project.
The building will have a six-storey podium and will offer 159 one- and two-bedroom rental units, which includes 32 homes that are accessible. Residents can enjoy amenities such as a Wellness Centre, Games Room, Arts and Activity Room, an exterior terrace, and shared ground-level spaces that encourage community interaction and activity.
In July, Laurin Construction was awarded the contract to serve as the general contractor by Ottawa Community Housing.
“Beausoleil is a community-focused development that will bring 159 new affordable homes to the heart of Lowertown,” said Diamond Schmitt Senior Associate Arne Suraga. “The design brings a sense of playfulness and colour to the streetscape, while creating active, welcoming spaces that support connection and community.”

The all-electric building is designed using Passive House principles, featuring solar energy and barrier-free aspects that promote sustainability, accessibility, and lasting affordability.
200 Beausoleil is one of the first projects to move forward under the Build Canada Homes partnership with the City of Ottawa. The initiative’s initial eight priority projects aim to create over 1,100 new rental homes as part of a larger plan to expedite up to 3,000 homes throughout Ottawa.
